Emma Baker

In November 2018, I was artist in residence at North Lands Creative, Scotland. There I was heavily influenced by the dramatic, unforgiving surroundings that also had a very calming and serene impact on me. Following many visits to the water’s edge, shielded from the ever-changing Caithness weather by the towering and immovable cliff faces, the 2-week residency accumulated in a new body of work titled ‘Carragh’, meaning rock or monument in Scottish Gaelic. Carragh is the embodiment of challenging, positive and solitary experiences, of accomplishments outweighing uncertainty, whilst conveying an essence of fragility with a core of permanence.
