ABOUT FRESH AIR SCULPTURE

Set up by art collectors, Lucy and David Abel Smith, the first Fresh Air Sculpture was held in the Quenington Old Rectory gardens in 1992. Acclaim for the show’s originality and innovative mixture of traditional, modern and cutting-edge outdoor sculpture has grown year by year and Fresh Air Sculpture is now an established and much anticipated fixture in the art events calendar. Fresh Air Sculpture became a charitable trust, under Quenington Sculpture Trust, in 1997.

In the autumn gales of 2017, a large branch came c In the autumn gales of 2017, a large branch came crashing down onto the Richard la Trobe Bateman designed bridge in our gardens. The swing-lift opening footbridge is made from painted Douglas Fir and galvanised steel and spans 10.5 metres across the River Coln. It can be raised and lowered easily by hand using a unique arrangement of cables and pulleys. Early in 2019, the bridge had to be pulled from the river and Richard (now in his 80s) returned to restore the bridge with his son. It is such a beautiful engineering creation and we were thrilled that it won the Wood Awards for Innovation in 2003. This is Lucy’s nativity, collected over 35 years, from Central Europe, Israel, Africa and Italy. The main players in the Nativity commissioned from an old craftsman in Telc in the Czech Republic every time Lucy took a tour there.
