ABOUT FRESH AIR SCULPTURE

Set up by art collectors, Lucy and David Abel Smith, the first Fresh Air Sculpture was held in the Quenington Old Rectory gardens in 1992. Acclaim for the show’s originality and innovative mixture of traditional, modern and cutting-edge outdoor sculpture has grown year by year and Fresh Air Sculpture is now an established and much anticipated fixture in the art events calendar. Fresh Air Sculpture became a charitable trust, under Quenington Sculpture Trust, in 1997.

This stunning monumental 'Cloaked Figure IX' is one of Chadwick’s largest and most powerful single figures. Held in suspension between a moment of watchful stillness and movement, this female figure wears a structured cloak reminiscent of so much of the bold fashion of the sixties but also timeless in its design conjuring ideas of cloaked medieval figures.

This two-metre tall figure is currently passing the time at Tate Britain, perched within a free two-room display dedicated to Henry Moore's sculptures.

Posted @withregram • @hillier.joseph And #breathe .... this sculpture was exhibited at a solo show at the #royalsocietyofsculptors and subsequently found its home on this remarkable site near Dublin thanks to Paul Doyle a very good #gardendesigner. The site is a hill that has been occupied for thousands of years by a wraith, an ancient settlement with a very distinct character. Many thanks to Paul for sharing his images.

The next in our Crafted Collectables series are Caroline Sharp’s Seed Capsules.

“Events this year are giving us all a chance to pause and reflect. The sustainable approach I take in my practice and my connection to nature’s seasonal shifts has been heightened and reinforced further during this time. These woven seedpod forms are in essence about latent and potential energy. Energy within the soil and earth translated into seeds and shooting growth. The tips of the Birch stems are left exposed respecting the character of the material and to suggest both fragility and transience.” – Caroline Sharp

Caroline Sharp’s woven work is strongly inﬂuenced by natural form, containment and movement. Her woven capsule forms, which are based on organic seedpods, respect the character and properties of the materials used. As such, the tips of the stem and the catkins and buds are left exposed to suggest fragility and transience. Sustainability is of paramount importance in Sharp’s work; the Dorset willow is from the artist’s personal garden coppice and the coppiced stems she uses are Dorset birch harvested as part of the Dorset Heathland management programme.

Posted @withregram • @alisoncrowther I just have to share some of the extraordinary images of a sculpture I made last year, Xylosphere I

Taken by the talented photographer Sarah Sheldrake @sassaloush
whilst cataloging my studio collection recently.

English oak, hand carved using the annual rings as a guide to produce the texture.
The spherical form first had circles fitted all over the surface. These were arborteched to produce the undulations - reminiscent of the stone ‘Petrospheres’ of Skarra Brae that I have studied
hence
‘Xylosphere’
‘Xylo’ being the Greek for wood

Amazingly this image now makes me think of the many breasted goddess Artemis, or Grace Jones leather clad in Jean Paul Gautier...

Then the whole surface was hand carved using traditional gouges and mallet, following exactly the annual rings. It was a labour of love.
