ABOUT FRESH AIR SCULPTURE

Set up by art collectors, Lucy and David Abel Smith, the first Fresh Air Sculpture was held in the Quenington Old Rectory gardens in 1992. Acclaim for the show’s originality and innovative mixture of traditional, modern and cutting-edge outdoor sculpture has grown year by year and Fresh Air Sculpture is now an established and much anticipated fixture in the art events calendar. Fresh Air Sculpture became a charitable trust, under Quenington Sculpture Trust, in 1997.

Thank you too to our community in Quenington Village for tolerating the disruption the exhibition brings to our generally quiet lives. To our gate volunteers, our INCREDIBLE education team, Robert and his gardening heroes and to our trustees, all of whose commitment is immense and never taken for granted. It was with terrible sadness that we learnt of the It was with terrible sadness that we learnt of the passing of Daniel Church. It was Dan who had made Lucy's beautiful seat after the drawings by Matthew Burt @matthewburtstudio Our thoughts are with Dan’s family, his colleagues, and his friends. @matthewburtstudio 'Lucy's Bench' named after the inimitable jewel of a woman who asked me to design her a special seat for her special place in her garden. Made by a master maker in our Wiltshire Workshops, Daniel Church. Tragically Dan was killed in a road accident very recently and his absence is rawly felt in our workshop. We've known Dan, man & boy. He started his apprenticeship with us, twenty years ago, straight from school & we witnessed him evolve into a wonderful family man & a hugely talented, intuitive master maker. He resonates in our workshop & will continue to do so. His sound approach, lives on in his working colleagues, who salute him. They carry him with them in the skills he passed on to them, he was like family to us all #hymntotheartisans #supportpeopleinsheds #makersandmaking #furnituremaking

Homage to Lviv, Ukraine Ballet figures copied fro Homage to Lviv, Ukraine Ballet figures copied from those seen outside the Opera House Café, Lviv, Ukraine. This opera house is still currently open, although the audience is now limited to 300 – the capacity of the air raid shelter. These figures were originally planned to be toppers for parasols. Thanks goes to Pete Moorhouse for being prepared to run with the idea, Remco Kingman for the drawings and East Glos Engineering for putting together the idea. First seen by Lucy Abel Smith on one of several visits to the Ukraine. £200 each available at Fresh Air Sculpture 2022. All proceeds to be split between the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal and UNICEF Romania. We have three works by Sally showing at Fresh Air Sculpture - swipe left to see - and in our chat Sally will be sharing her inspirations and methods for each piece. Sally’s artworks explore our precarious relationship with and the mark we make on the environment. Sally uses clay to capture a printed element of her hand, in the squeezed fingerprints embedded in each tiny piece of clay in the ghostly-white series “Pernicious” to “Squeezed”, a bunch of ceramics, hanging like visceral fruit, made by squeezing clay in her fist. Encouraging Children to Collect (art) Objects (ECCO) is supported by our exhibitors who donate a working sketch or model or artwork which can then be purchased by young people under the age of 18 - and yes we are very strict about this! Prices range from £10 - £60 with the aim to encourage the collecting of original works of art from a young age. You can see the ECCO collection in our entry tent - the works on offer are amazing. This is ‘Nest’ by @clairemaletartist @clairemaletartist ‘Nest’, recycled plastics and wire.
