ABOUT FRESH AIR SCULPTURE

Set up by art collectors, Lucy and David Abel Smith, the first Fresh Air Sculpture was held in the Quenington Old Rectory gardens in 1992. Acclaim for the show’s originality and innovative mixture of traditional, modern and cutting-edge outdoor sculpture has grown year by year and Fresh Air Sculpture is now an established and much anticipated fixture in the art events calendar. Fresh Air Sculpture became a charitable trust, under Quenington Sculpture Trust, in 1997.

@laurenceedwards.bronze I was genuinely unnerved to see these five together in the forest for the first time. Left by myself I entered their time, god knows when it was or is, but they were passing by in a hurry wary, worried and in need of something. They go to @messumswiltshire . (See a dwarfed Johnny Messum in the last slide..with my boots , yet to be returned!!!)
For a big new show, filling the 12th century barn and the long gallery.. I’m delighted with the tome the gallery has produced for the show, over a hundred pages with beautiful essays by #juliablackburn #stevehurst and #isabelladevasconcelas and stunning photos by @billjacksonfoto and #dougatfield
Show opens on the 6th of August until the 16th of October…check gallery website for events and info..

Bridget Bailey is one of 27 artists who have made Bridget Bailey is one of 27 artists who have made work for 'Insect Odyssey', an exhibition about insects curated by Prudence Maltby and and Lis Darby for The Salisbury Museum ending September 25th, 2022.

Bridget’s ‘Taxonomy of Making’ installation sets out the elements of her making process with the respect given to scientific specimens. There are many parallels between the evolution of making with the way nature evolves.

Making methods have their own taxonomy, creating odd relationships between a wasp and a worm, and techniques that jump species, from bee’s bottoms to wild strawberries.

Odd finds that are inspirational or might suggest part of an insect become new rare specimens. Precious because people take such trouble to collect them.

Experiments are important - flea’s leg joints that got too complicated, tick’s mandibles that looked too cosy. A breakthrough or showing what’s missing, they’re the ancestors to the finished works.

Bridget shared with us that...

'Fresh Air Sculpture and Insect Odyssey are the two most special exhibitions I’m doing this year. The right subject matter in a lovely place, beautifully curated, with artists I admire'.

An amazing looking exhibition born from the pandem An amazing looking exhibition born from the pandemic now on at Chichester Cathedral.

Thank you @jotaylorceramics for letting us share your lovely images.

@jotaylorceramics So good to see the full show in situ at last! Visited @togetherwerise2022 @chicathedral today, extraordinary light at times, and beautiful sound as the choir & organ performed for a service.

The placement is perfectly sympathetic to the spaces and materials of the building, thanks to the expertise of curator @visualartsadvisor

We developed this exhibition from the seeds of an idea discussed over zoom meetings @royal_sculptors during the pandemic- it's quite something to see it all installed. There's lots of information on the Chichester Cathedral website - show runs until 6th September

@barbaralong_art Just a few of the many cobijos (s @barbaralong_art Just a few of the many cobijos (shelters) made by some of the many groups who took part in the 16 workshops I ran at @freshairsculpture over the past three weeks. We worked with primary, secondary and SEND learners as well groups of vulnerable adults. As usual I learnt far more from participants and the other tutors and the manner in which everyone created such individual structures was just a privilege to witness. It’s the last day of our education programme at It’s the last day of our education programme at Fresh Air Sculpture 2022!

We’ve created, sketched, looked, made beetles, built shelters, created creatures, been inspired by artworks and eachother and generally had a great time!

Thank you to all the children and adults we have had the pleasure of working with over the past three weeks and also to Emily, Barbara and the team for working tirelessly and producing such an amazing education programme for our visitors.

It was with terrible sadness that we learnt of the It was with terrible sadness that we learnt of the passing of Daniel Church.

It was Dan who had made Lucy's beautiful seat after the drawings by Matthew Burt @matthewburtstudio

Our thoughts are with Dan’s family, his colleagues, and his friends.

@matthewburtstudio 'Lucy's Bench' named after the inimitable jewel of a woman who asked me to design her a special seat for her special place in her garden. Made by a master maker in our Wiltshire Workshops, Daniel Church. Tragically Dan was killed in a road accident very recently and his absence is rawly felt in our workshop. We've known Dan, man & boy. He started his apprenticeship with us, twenty years ago, straight from school & we witnessed him evolve into a wonderful family man & a hugely talented, intuitive master maker. He resonates in our workshop & will continue to do so. His sound approach, lives on in his working colleagues, who salute him. They carry him with them in the skills he passed on to them, he was like family to us all #hymntotheartisans #supportpeopleinsheds #makersandmaking #furnituremaking
