ABOUT FRESH AIR SCULPTURE

Set up by art collectors, Lucy and David Abel Smith, the first Fresh Air Sculpture was held in the Quenington Old Rectory gardens in 1992. Acclaim for the show’s originality and innovative mixture of traditional, modern and cutting-edge outdoor sculpture has grown year by year and Fresh Air Sculpture is now an established and much anticipated fixture in the art events calendar. Fresh Air Sculpture became a charitable trust, under Quenington Sculpture Trust, in 1997.

Apply to Exhibit at Fresh Air Sculpture 2024

We are inviting applications from artists for our 2024 sculpture exhibition.

Fresh Air Sculpture is an outdoor selling exhibition that has been operating for the last 30 years showing renowned national and international artists alongside emerging new talent.

We are looking for ‘fresh’ new work with artistic intent in addition to technical proficiency, that is original, handmade or partly handmade, has been recently created and has not been previously exhibited within a 30-mile radius.

All work should be of a suitable scale for a large outdoor garden setting and be robust enough to withstand the vagaries of the British weather.

Fresh Air Sculpture is open to all new ideas and will consider site-specific or ephemeral proposals where the artist has raised their own funding. This is a challenging remit but challenges can often push artwork in new and unexpected directions.

We welcome submissions from international sculptors but it will be the artist’s responsibility to arrange and cover shipping costs and any customs, taxes and duties due.

The deadline for submissions is 1st December 2023.

Matthew and his team will be presenting some of these timeless classics over a long weekend at the beginning of December and invite you to join them in celebration.

The Studio where Matthew’s designs start life, the Workshop where his makers bring them to fruition and the nearby Showroom will all be open.

At all venues, you will be able to see these exquisite pieces, along with smaller items (perfect for Christmas) on display and available to buy or commission.

The company is proud to produce work of such quality in Britain, using British timbers.

Matthew’s work is available exclusively from his Wiltshire base.

This is just beyond beautiful and extremely moving.

A dome originally meant a home. The work invites us to see, hear, and feel our home, our city as an interconnected web of species and cultures, to learn and remember the names and sing those under threat into continued existence. The work echoes the invitation invoked by the 92-year-old climate activist Joanna Macy: “Now it can dawn on us: we are the world knowing itself. As we relinquish our isolation, we come home again...we come home to our mutual belonging.”

We are losing languages as fast as we are losing species: the diversity of the ethnosphere is endangered in parallel with that of the biosphere. The languages sung within the work by The London Bulgarian Choir, London African Gospel Choir, South African Cultural Gospel Choir, The Sixteen, Tenebrae, Southwark Cathedral Merbecke Choir and The Choir with No Name include Xhosa, Zulu, Latin, and a range of Bulgarian and African dialects.

Link in bio for details of the choral performances including the sources of the texts by John Seed, Joanna Macy, David Abram, Simon Barnes and more that I am reading each evening in the voiceovers between the choirs and bird solos.

The sound design and composition in which choirs sing the latin names of all of the 243 species over 10 days is by Polyphonia - animated video projections are by Luke Halls Studio. The work has been produced by Jo Mackay / Larmaclive, fabricated by StageOne and Diagon, projection by CT, sound by Autograph, lead associate designer from my team is Matteo Mastrandrea, with studio associate designers Will Brown, Ellie Wintour, Ben Lucraft and Gonzalo Padilla. 'An Invitation to Drift' 2021

"This work consists of 33 hexagonal ceramic units or vessels which tessellate to form a proposal for a restoration initiative for the Essex native oyster. Prompted by fieldwork in the River Blackwater estuary for a workshop at the British Science Festival, 'An invitation to drift' imagines a habitat where a balance can be reached between native oysters and invasive slipper limpets"

This piece was originally designed to be a floor based installation. In our gallery space we can view the work head on, creating a visual reference to a hive 🐝 in keeping with our #beethechange 2022 initiative

This piece asks us to consider how we design the space around us with care to accommodate different ways to exist on this earth
