ABOUT FRESH AIR SCULPTURE

Set up by art collectors, Lucy and David Abel Smith, the first Fresh Air Sculpture was held in the Quenington Old Rectory gardens in 1992. Acclaim for the show’s originality and innovative mixture of traditional, modern and cutting-edge outdoor sculpture has grown year by year and Fresh Air Sculpture is now an established and much anticipated fixture in the art events calendar. Fresh Air Sculpture became a charitable trust, under Quenington Sculpture Trust, in 1997.

Sally de Courcy constructs her artworks from cast Sally de Courcy constructs her artworks from cast objects. At first glance these decorative mandalas look strikingly beautiful with their pure white contours and repetitive design. However, as the viewer begins to recognise the objects as symbols of war and death, the aesthetic of the mandala takes on a whole new meaning. Sally's work is driven by her strong sense of social justice. Born in Canterbury, Kent, she recalls happy days spent playing on the beach, yet these memories are shadowed by the times that refugees would arrive ashore. Having also worked as a junior medic during the early days of her career in Khao I Dang refugee camp, Cambodia, Sally has always carried the refugee crisis close to her heart. Sally's The Colour of Mourning will be available to view at Fresh Air Sculpture in June 2022. The Pool House Gallery at Fresh Air Sculpture show The Pool House Gallery at Fresh Air Sculpture showcases and sells the works of around twenty five contemporary designer makers across all media. In 2022, we are thrilled that @takahashimcgil will be with us. Based in Devon, the husband and wife team Kaori Takahashi and Mark McGilvray create functional homeware and furniture made from a mix of local or sustainable hardwoods. They combine time-honoured Japanese traditions honed in Tokyo with western techniques. Wonderful to see @michaelshaw.art ‘s inflatable Wonderful to see @michaelshaw.art ‘s inflatable U-too @hubsleaford Posted @withregram • @michaelshaw.art Pleased to announce the installation of my latest site-specific inflatable U-too @ The Hub, Sleaford. The sculpture forms the centrepiece of my exhibition ACTIVATE/PARTICPATE where audience presence and actions can actively contribute to the form and aesthetics of various sculptures. But for now, let’s focus on the giant silverfish! This inflatable measures 23.3 x 10.9 x 3.8m and is made from a ripstop nylon with a reflective coating. This new material endeavour allows the sculpture to take on the hues of its surrounding, including the clothing of viewers and other adjacent sculptures. In this way, everyone’s experience of U-too will be unique. The show opens this Saturday 25th, September and runs until January 16th, 2022. At the time, Hepworth’s full-scale plaster prototypes, that are now permanently displayed at The Hepworth Wakefield, were still housed there. For our 10th anniversary, it therefore seemed appropriate to invite Ryan to create an intervention amongst the plasters that she knew so well. Veronica Ryan’s new commission, Magnolia/Magnoliaceae, is on display at The Hepworth Wakefield as part of Barbara Hepworth: Art & Life. Entry to the the largest exhibition of Barbara Hepworth’s work since the artist’s death in 1975 is £12 / £10. Free for Members, Wakefield residents and under 16s. Open Wed-Sun, 10am-4pm.
